Maldives
The Maldives Central Route is one of the country’s classic liveaboard diving itineraries, usually covering North Malé Atoll, South Malé Atoll and Ari Atoll. It is known for clear tropical water, channel diving, coral reefs, strong currents and encounters with large pelagic marine life.

Where it is
The Central Route is located around the central atolls of the Maldives and is one of the most popular areas for liveaboard diving.
Marine life to see
The Maldives is famous for its large pelagic marine life and rich reef ecosystems.
You may encounter:
- Manta rays
- Whale sharks
- Grey reef sharks
- White-tip reef sharks
- Blacktip reef sharks
- Silvertip sharks
- Hammerhead sharks
- Eagle rays
- Tuna
- Giant trevally
- Napoleon wrasse
- Turtles
- Moray eels
- Octopus
- Large schools of reef fish
Shark and manta encounters are some of the main highlights, although sightings depend on season, location and conditions.
Macro or landscape?
Wide-angle and big marine life are the main highlights.
Landscape / Wide Angle
Excellent for:
- Manta rays
- Reef sharks
- Shark cleaning stations
- Large schools of fish
- Coral reefs
- Channel walls
- Eagle rays
- Whale sharks
The Central Route is particularly rewarding for wide-angle photographers who enjoy dramatic shark and manta encounters.
Macro
Macro life is also present around the reefs:
- Nudibranchs
- Shrimp
- Crabs
- Gobies
- Blennies
- Leaf fish
- Small reef creatures
Recommendation: Bring a wide-angle setup as your primary choice. A macro setup can be useful if you enjoy searching the reef between big-animal encounters.
How many dives you need
The Maldives Central Route is generally better suited to divers with some experience because many dives involve currents, channel entries and drift diving.
Experienced — 50+ dives
Ideal for divers who want to make the most of shark dives, manta encounters, current dives and underwater photography.
Tip: If you have not dived for a long time, complete a refresher or Reactivate dive before joining a Maldives liveaboard.
On land

Stop at a remote sandbank surrounded by turquoise water. It is a great place to relax, swim and enjoy the scenery between dives.
